Saina Serves Up Vegetarian Japanese Cuisine in Concord

A family-run restaurant tucked away on Colfax Street in downtown Concord is catering to vegans, vegetarians and Japanese food fans with its diverse menu and colorful dishes.

Saina Vegetarian Japanese opened at 1819 Colfax Street in February 2013 and has since proven popular with locals looking to escape the meat-centric restaurant scene. The small eatery has been listed on the healthy restaurant guide website Happy Cow and with Bay Area Vegetarians. It also has a high rating on Yelp.com with 26 reviews.

The menu includes miso and vegetable soup, salads, vegetable sushi rolls, noodles and entrées like the "Full Moon" tofu custard and the "Saina Delight" brown rice with mixed vegetables. Locally named rolls include the "Colfax Roll" with asparagus and yam tempura and the "Concord Roll" with asparagus, spinach, avocado, cucumber, broccoli, picked burdock and kaiware sprouts.

Saina joins a couple of other vegetarian and vegan restaurants that have cropped up in downtown Concord in recent years, including Veggie Today and Lettuce In.

Dishes at the Japanese vegetarian eatery range from $5.50 for soup to $11.50 for a sushi dinner combination.

Saina is open Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 .m. and on Sundays until 8 p.m. The restaurant also offers free delivery at (925) 521-9555.
