Safeway on Monument Boulevard Closes

The store shut down operations in mid-January after nearly 30 years at that location.

It's been a fixture at the corner of Monument Boulevard and Oak Grove Road for almost 30 years.

But the Safeway store at 2250 Monument Blvd. is no longer in service.

The store closed its doors in mid-January after operating at that location since 1984.

Keith Turner, Safeway's director of public relations for Northern California, said the employees who worked at the Monument store have been transferred to other locations.

There are three remaining Safeway stores in Concord. Two are on Clayton Road and one is on Willow Pass Road.

This is a blighted part of town, but maybe little by little it can recover? A daunting task for sure. I'm so glad Safeway was able to relocate the employees.

I moved to that part of town as a young newlywed almost 20 years ago. It's where I first grocery shopped as I learned how to cook. Where I took my babies as we shopped for our food as a little young family. That's sad. I'm sad for the area too. I guess Safeway had to do what a lot of families have gas to do... Move out.

The community is now at least 70% Hispanic, price conscious, and more inclined to shop in neighborhood storesbthat provide products they like to buy. Safeway priced itself out of that neighborhood.

My favorite Mexican restaurant, El Faro, is there - first the Starbucks went and now Safeway. Too bad. It's a rough area.
