Monument Grill Aims To Serve 'Working Community'

A new restaurant has opened up on Monument Boulevard, and co-owner Sam Harris says the low prices are reflective of the "working community".

Monument Grill had its grand opening last Saturday, May 11, offering breakfasts, sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs for under $6 a meal.

The "Monument Big Breakfast" is a favorite, according to Harris. The meal includes three eggs, two pieces of bacon, two sausages, hash browns, toast and jelly for $5.75.

Harris has been working in the restaurant business for as long as he can remember, he says, but this is his first time "on the other side" as an owner. He opened Monument Grill with co-owner Maria Nuez and says they decided to stick with breakfast and burgers rather than competing with all the taquerias in the area.

Business so far has been "good," Harris says, but most of his customers come outside of work hours.

Harris added that he thinks business will pick up when school is out and he can offer cheap but tasty burgers to school kids and families.

Keeping the prices low is a priority for the restaurant, says Harris, since the surrounding community is of lower income than other parts of Concord.

"I could probably charge $10.95 for a veggie omelette in Todos Santos," said Harris. Instead, he charges $5.25.

Monument Grill is located at 2995 Monument Boulevard and is open seven days a week, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
