It went up fast and is dropping slower, mused Mohammad Shekib, manager of the 7-Eleven at Concord Boulevard and Landana Drive in Concord, where the price has dropped two cents in the last week to $4.21.9 Wednesday.

It dropped a nickel at the Chevron station on the 4700 block of Clayton Road, reported Manager Rafael Zaragoza, from $4.31.9 to $4.26.9.

In the East Bay, the average price now sits at $4.23 a gallon. That's four cents lower than a week ago.

Those prices are still more than they were a month ago. Nonetheless, the recent decline is being seen in most East Bay communities

Six Concord stations listed on gasprices.mapquest.com reported prices ranging from $4.09 to $4.29.

In Walnut Creek, the average price ranges from $4.17 to $4.27 on the Web site.

In Livermore, which generally has some of the higher prices in the region, the cost for unleaded regular has dropped considerably. The stations listed on gasprices.mapquest.com in Livermore show prices hovering from $4.19 to $4.35 a gallon, with most places being in the $4.20 range.

At the Chevron station off the I-580 North Livermore exit, the price last week for a gallon of regular unleaded was above the $4.40 mark. On Tuesday afternoon, it was $4.29.

Motorists, however, didn't seem to notice.

Josh Mort, a Livermore resident who works in Oakland, said the prices are still high. He added he drives the same distance to and from work, so he has to fill up regardless of the price.

"I tend not to pay attention," Mort said. "I have to drive the same. I'm not going to changing from my driving pattern."

Castro Valley continues to be one of the lower priced markets with stations selling gas for between $4.11 and $4.19 a gallon.

Down the road in Newark, the prices range from $4.15 to $4.19.
