Doing a Career 180: Have You Tried It?

Changing careers can be a major undertaking, especially in a tough job market. But sometimes opportunity knocks. Have you answered the door?

The popular theory is that Americans switch careers between three and seven times during the course of their professional lives. Although the Bureau of Labor Statistics says there is no data to back up this claim, there are plenty of anecdotes to suggest that it might be true.

Some people climb the corporate ladder and then switch to climbing actual ladders. Others take a leap from Wall Street to Main Street, ditching the stock market for the farmers market or becoming mom-and-pop shop business owners.

Doing a career 180 in a down economy might seem like a bad choice, but some experts say that the Recession and its aftermath provide an opportunity to re-evaluate your career trajectory and make a bold move.
