BART Board Cancels Monday Meeting

by Alex Gronke

Even as the full consequences of a BART strike on the Bay Area commute became painfully apparent Monday morning, the transit agency’s Board of Directors cancelled a meeting scheduled for the afternoon without offering a reason for the abrupt change of plans.

One of the unions representing BART workers announced Monday morning that union members would attend the meeting to "demand answers to the tragic train accident that left two BART employees dead, one a member of AFSCME Local 3993."

On Sunday, two of the unions representing BART workers proposed ending the impasse by allowing changes involving the use of new technology, like direct deposit of wages, but retain work rules related to worker and passenger safety. The proposal from the Service Employees International Union Local 1021 and Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1555 came one day after a train killed two BART workers inspecting track between the Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek stations.
