Create Your Own Luck This Weekend – Designate a Sober Driver!

A word from Mothers Against Drunk Driving

Submitted By Jody Iorns, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, SF Bay Area

St. Patrick ’s Day has become a national day of celebration. This year, through the luck of the Irish, St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday and that means that those celebrations will be more plentiful and, as a result, riskier than those held during weekdays. According to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, in 2009, 134 fatalities occurred on St. Patrick’s Day alone – of those 37% were due to drunk drivers.

DON’T LET THIS BE YOU! If you do plan to enjoy the celebrations, create your own luck by simply
planning ahead:

  • Designate a sober driver – remember, even buzzed driving is drunk driving
  • Plan to use public transportation: BART, buses, VTA
  • Remember the Safe & Sober Rides Program: from 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, through 3 a.m. on Sunday, March 18, Berg Lawyers will pay up to $35 of your taxi cab ride home – in Alameda, Oakland, Emeryville & Berkeley: Call Veterans Cab at (800) 281-4488. In San Francisco: Call Luxor Cab at (415) 282-4141. Any fare exceeding $35 must be paid in cash.

Fran: Glad you see the humor in this, I just enjoy all the warnings people offer. Having said that the MADD group's message is important and no one should drink and drive; nor should they drink to the point they are not in control and responsible.

"Why Medical Marijuana Laws Reduce Traffic Deaths" - Healthland http://healthland.time.com/2011/12/02/why-medical-marijuana-laws-reduce-traffic-deaths/#ixzz1p4FZx0g0 David, Speaking of keeping it light and stereotypes, a friend sent me this article a few days ago and I thought you might enjoy checking it out. The Leprechan says of the green weed, "Scream as you may! Scream as you might! If you don't get stoned, you'll be dead on this night." Full disclaimer, I don't smoke the stuff myself, but I am a Californian so that seems to make me guilty by association. ;-)

I am also 25% Irish and usually just brush off the "drunk Irish stereotype" but you're right David. Imagine if they had an article about where to go for the best fried chicken, watermelon, and collard greens for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. I wouldn't want to even imagine the backlash!

"An Irishman is never drunk as long as he can hold onto a single blade of grass to keep from falling off the face of the earth" - An old Irish adage.
