Council Approves 'Safe Route To School' Funds

Concord will use money leftover from a pavement condition study to bolster the endeavor near Wren Elementary School.

Concord City Council approved funding Wednesday to improve a route to school by enhancing it with a wide sidewalk and a bike lane.

Council unanimously approved transferring $25,331.79 leftover from a 2012 pavement condition assessment study into a pot of money that will pay for city staff time to design this project.

The project is called the Farm Bureau Road Safe Route to School project and will upgrade a 1,100-foot stretch of sidewalk near Wren Elementary School, according to a staff report prepared for Tuesday’s City Council meeting.  It will also install signs and create a Class III Bike route that will run along the west side of Farm Bureau Road from Willow Pass Road to Wren Avenue.

The project is in the design phase and is expected to begin in the Spring of 2014.
