The Tale of a Local Psych Rock Band

The Chaw talks about Concord-Walnut Creek roots in Chronicle column.

As the band was coming together, the musicians were riding bikes in downtown Concord and shouting out prospective names.

Someone shouted "Black Tar Chaw" and that struck a chord. "We edited it to the Chaw," according to a collective band interview published in "Bandwidth," a San Francisco Chronicle column. In the interview, the Concord band The Chaw talks about musical competition in the Bay Area and the honesty and experience that goes into their psych rock. The Chaw put out its debut LP, "The Chaw," in November.

Three of the band members, who now live in Concord, attended Berean Christian High in Walnut Creek. You can get a plug of the Chaw at the Red House Live, 1667 Botelho Dr., Walnut Creek, on Thursday, Jan. 31.
