Solano Drive-In Listed Among Most 'Amazing' in Country

Salon.com has included the Westwind Solano theater in a list of nine "amazing" drive-ins nationwide that have "stood the test of time."

Concord's very own drive-in movie theater is getting some national recognition as one of nine most "amazing" drive-ins still remaining in the country, as listed by Salon.com.

According to Drive-Ins.com, there are about 450 drive-in movie theaters currently in operation in the United States. More than 4,000 have closed nationwide, including the former Concord Motorin theater in Sherman Field, which opened in 1947 and was demolished in 1978. Another drive-in movie theater in Concord, Concord Auto Movies, opened in 1957 and was demolished in 1977. The drive-in on Solano Way opened in 1964. It was closed in 2005 and became a swap-meet only, but reopened as a theater in 2007.

Here's what Salon.com says about the Solano theater:

This family-friendly attraction with several spots across the U.S. (including California, Nevada and Arizona) prides itself on offering first-run double features (save for premiere events) on the cheap — which is quite the deal, considering their 65-foot screens are among the biggest in the biz. And if you have great car speakers, even better: squawk boxes of old have been replaced with Dolby quality audio piped through your car’s FM stereo.
