  • Why Go: Buzz Bertolero will teach you how to successfully grow tomatoes. The class covers soil preparation, the merits of heirloom versus hybrid varieties, watering techniques, troubleshooting problems and ripening tomatoes off the vine.

Craft Beer Festival

  • Where: 333 Ferry St, Martinez (Waterfront Park); April 9, 1 to 5 p.m.
  • Why Go: There’s beer! Sample more than 30 kinds of microbrews at this beer festival at Waterfront Park. Enjoy live music, and food to purchase. Some sample breweries: 21 st Amendment, Anchor, Black Diamond, Hoppy, Marin, Eel River.
  • Price: $35/$55 VIP, $45 day of event, $5 designated driver

Contra Costa Home & Garden Show

  • Where:  April 8, noon to 6 p.m., April 9 and 10, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Why Go: Remodeling? Landscaping? Go to the Contra Costa Home & Garden Shows' 26th Annual "Spring Show." 
  • Price: $6, free to children under 12, $6 parking

The Beauty of Mount Diablo Artists' Reception

  • Where: ; April 9, 5 to 7:30 p.m.
  • Why Go: The Lindsay Wildlife Museum is holding an opening reception for their new art exhibit. The exhibit will feature works from 13 artists and photographers depicting Mount Diablo wildlife and landscapes. 
  • Price: Free

Vegetable Gardening Workshop

  • Where: ; April 9, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Why Go: The Contra Costa Master Gardeners Organization and the Walnut Creek Library hosts a seasonal vegetable gardening workshop. This presentation, given by Janet Miller, will provide you the information to create a garden full of seasonal vegetables.
