Today's Mega Millions Jackpot Closing In a Half-Billion Dollars

$400 million prize would be the second-largest California jackpot of all time.

In mere hours, you could be $400 million richer -- assuming you bought a lotto ticket.

At  8 p.m. Tuesday, numbers will be drawn for the latest Mega Millions lottery game.

According to California Lottery officials, this is now the third largest Mega Millions jackpot of all time, and the seventh largest in the United States history.

"If someone in our state wins, the $400 million prize would also become the 2nd largest jackpot in California history," officials said.

The largest jackpot in California history was won just last month, by someone who bought their ticket in Milpitas.   That person won $425.3 million playing Powerball.

The Mega Millions game, which is played in 42 other states plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands, costs $1 to play and tickets can be purchased up to 7:45 p.m. on the day of the draw.

The odds of winning the grand prize are just 1 in 259 million, according to lottery officials.

If no one wins on Tuesday night, the jackpot will roll over to Friday.
