Patch Picks: Staycations

We have a nice break in the weather, which can mean only one thing – or make it five things – pack up the kids or get a group of friends and go hiking, biking, horseback riding or watch a film outdoors.

1. Mount Diablo State Park – (Mitchell Creek — Eagle Peak Loop, Concord) – Hit the dirt roads with a great hike or bike on this trail called “creek to peak,” which begins at Mitchell Canyon and climbs on fire roads. It’s an easy to not-so-easy trail. Views at the top are breathtaking, especially after all the rain. For more information, go to www.Trails.com.

2. Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve – (5175 Somersville Road, Antioch) – You’ll see grassy rolling hills and chaparral here as well as chamise, black sage and manzanita-covered slopes. Pack a lunch, plenty of water and sunblock and you’re set. Oh, don’t forget the camera.

3. Round Valley Regional Preserve – (Off Marsh Creek Road, Clayton) – This hiking and biking area has easy to difficult levels, but the views at the top are worth it. Parking and hiking are free. This is also a place to bring your horses, but dogs are not allowed.

4. Pixieland Amuzement Park – (2750 E. Olivera Road, Concord) – A great place to take the kids or kids-at-heart! From carnival rides to birthday parties, there’s so much here to fill your day. You’ll forget all about winter and focus on spring. Check out hours at www.pixieland.com.

5. Solano Drive-Ins I & II –  (1611 Solano Way, Concord) – A swap meet by day and a movie theatre by night, score a great deal on antiques and home-and-garden finds in the morning, then watch Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules or Battle: Los Angeles under the stars at night. If you can’t remember the last time you were here, things have changed – repaved parking lots, remodeled bathrooms, live music, and extra shading and seating areas.
