Non-Profit Purchases 1,080 Acres For Mount Diablo State Park

Save Mount Diablo buys land in the Curry Canyon area

Another 1,080 acres is being added to Mount Diablo State Park.

The non-profit organization Save Mount Diablo has purchased the acreage in the Curry Canyon area on the southeast side of the mountain.

The land was bought for $7.2 million from the estate of Ettore and Geraldine Bertagnolli. The money was obtained by the organization from two loans.

Save Mount Diablo now has three years to raise the funds to permanently protect the acreage. It's the largest and most expensive acquisition in the group's history.

The property will close four gaps on the mountain's trails. It's also just outside the burn area from the fire that charred the mountain's southern side in September.

On that front, Rich McDrew of the Mount Diablo Interpretative Association has a video on YouTube in which he explains the group's efforts to restore the land scorched by the blaze.
