Cherries Sweeten the Farmers' Market

The Todos Santos Plaza farmers' market is glistening with an abundance of sweet red cherries, which are in season for only a short time ending in June.

There are around 500 varieties of cherry, with about a dozen kinds available at the farmers' market, according to the Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association (PCFMA). The cost at the Tuesday and Thursday market in Concord is between $3.50 and $4.25 per pound.

Here's what the PCFMA says about the nutritional value of cherries:

"Cherries contain anthocyanins, the red pigment in berries that has been shown to reduce pain and inflammation. Cherries have also been shown to contain high levels of melatonin which is important for the function of the immune system and emotional well-being."

Find cherry recipes like "cherry relish" and "cherry-chicken salad" on the PCFMA website.
