Bring Dad to Todos Santos Plaza and Let Him Wander

Corvettes, chili and award-winning Father's Day essay winners will be there.

Happy Father's Day eve.

The big day is Sunday, with enough activities at Todos Santos Plaza for dads with attention deficit issues. More about those activities below, but let’s get to the dad sentiments first.

Look to the right for the three young winners of the DadDay essay, who will get their awards Sunday at the plaza.

Emmanuel Asberry, age 10, of Willow Glen Court, whose teacher is Ms. Camozzi, wrote about his dad Charles, “He gives me turtles. The best Dad is the world is my Dad.”

Aisling Murphy, 11, of Sweetbriar Court, whose teacher is Ms. Stevenson, wrote about her dad Andrew Stryker, “My dad also tries to include me in everything he does. If my dad and my sister are playing outside he will always invite me to play with them. Also, whenever he is washing the car or putting on license plates he will invite me to help.”

Emma Ramirez, 11, of Morengo Drive, whose teacher is Mr. Nick, wrote about her dad Gary: “You are the best and my best friend. I can rely on you when I’m sad, to make me feel better.”

The city of Concord held the DadDay essay contest.

starts at 11 a.m. at Todos Santos Plaza. There will be a nominal charge for tasting and voting on the winner in each category. At 2 p.m., the Steely Dan tribute band Aja Vu takes the plaza stage.

Many local fire stations compete mightily in the cookoff, and raise money for their “Bikes for Tykes” program to give new and repair bicycles to kids.

It might even be that some dads would like to stroll around the plaza and look at some low-slung, fast cars, some of which look like Mako sharks. Diablo Valley Corvettes will host its 41st Corvette Car Show with more than 125 models to gawk at from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. There’s a raffle and you can bring a bag of nonperishable food to support the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano.
