A Little Ice Cream, a Little History at the Galindo House

Concord Historical Society gives public tours of its renovation work on the historic house.

Concord stepped out at a well attended ice cream social Sunday as  the Concord Historical Society showed off its renovation work on the historic Galindo House.

People lined up for tours of groups of five through the renovation inside as the Sassy Brass group sat on the front porch, facing Clayton Road, pumping out jams of Dixieland music. There was also ice cream, beer, a silent auction, and historical society books and brochures available.

About 250 people had come through, said society President Lloyd Crenna. Some of them were former students of Ruth Galindo, the last resident of the house, a longtime Spanish teacher at Mount Diablo High School.

Crenna said he spoke to one woman who was related to the Galindos by marriage and had come to the house for sleepovers in her youth.

The house was built in 1856 for Maria Dolores Manuela Pacheco, the daughter of pioneer settler Don Salvio Pacheco, and her husband, Don Francisco Galindo. After the 1999 death of Ruth Galindo, the last direct descendant of the family, the house was willed to the city of Concord. The city in turn deeded it to the Concord Historical Society last year for $1.

The historical society has painted the house gray with dark gray trim and gold accents, shored up a sagging side of the structure, installed new ducts, heating and air conditioning, and added historically appropriate landscaping.

The society is hoping to have a public event at the Galindo House in December. Also, Crenna said, there are plans to add a gazebo and make the facility rentable for wedding receptions.
