12-12-12 A Popular Day To Get Married

Oh, it's also the beginning of the end of the world, according to the Mayans.

The Contra Costa County Clerk's Office in Martinez today was booked up for weddings on Wednesday, the first time that has happened on a weekday in quite some time.

The reason? It was Dec. 12, 2012 -- 12-12-12, the last time in most of our lives we're going to see a sequence of numbers like that. The next time will be Jan. 1, 2101. And for some reason, people thought that would be a good day to be married.

Do you have a lot of weddings going on today, Patch inquired of an employee at the county clerk's office.

"You could say that," the employee said, his voice fairly dripping with irony. "We're fully booked today. That's very unusual for a weekday, except Friday."

Clerks throughout the Bay Area reported the same thing -- an unusual number of weddings taking place on a Wednesday.

It's a particularly strange day to get married if you're at all paying attention to the Mayan calendar, which ends later this month. This is, according to that ancient culture, the end of times.

So, as a tribute to that prophecy, which hopefully is as accurate as other end times predictions have been, we present a song the Mayans would have loved had they had access to it.

Ladies and gentlemen, we give you the great Skeeter Davis with her biggest hit, "The End of the World." Enjoy, and enjoy the rest of 12-12.

Death by marriage. I'd rather die by chocolate. At least it's worth dying for.

This song is probably more relevant. http://youtu.be/i2o9-jmtNoU
