What's the Story With the Story Poles?

They give an idea of the scale and mass of the complex the Clayton Community Church hopes to build downtown.

If you've been around downtown Clayton this week, you probably noticed a wooden structure being erected on Main Street.

No buildings are being built — yet.

The Clayton Community Church is proposing to build a 42,164-square-foot complex downtown . To get the green light, the proposal must be approved by the Planning Commission and the City Council.

The initial environmental impact report for the project was released last week and the city has asked the church to erect story poles on the site. The poles don't show the architectural design, but give people an idea of the scale and mass of the project. To provide a visual idea of the project, the church will post paintings of the project in their office window downtown.

“The city has initiated the story poles so people will have an idea of the scope of the project,” Clayton Community Church pastor Shawn Robinson said. “We want to honor the city’s request and if it helps people understand what we are planning, we are in favor of it.”

All of the poles are expected to be installed by the end of the day Saturday and will stay up through June 19.

Members of the public can comment on the EIR at the Planning Commission meeting at the on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
