Concord Hosts East Bay Open Chess Tournament

A total of 99 chess players competed this past weekend in an event hosted by the Contra Costa Chess Club at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Concord.

The East Bay Open Chess Tournament took place this past weekend in Concord, drawing grand masters and rookies alike to the chess table in a battle of skill and tactical decision making.

Mayor Ron Leone kicked off the weekend-long tournament at the Crown Plaza Hotel by proclaiming Nov. 9 to Nov. 11 the official "Contra Costa Chess Club East Bay Open Tournament Days."

The event was hosted by the Contra Costa Chess Club, which meets Thursday evenings from 6:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Clayton Starbucks at 1536 Kirker Pass Rd.

Grand Master Enrico Sevillano was declared the "clear winner" of the event, and took home a chunk of the tournaments $6,000 prize fund. According to the World Chess Federation, Sevillano is ranked 29th of all active chess players in the United States.
