Concord High Boys Soccer Ties Clayton Valley, 1-1

Aggressive play sees Clayton Valley and Concord High in a draw after penalty kick.

The Clayton Valley High boys soccer team tied Concord High 1-1 on Tuesday evening.

Concord led 1-0 for most of the game after senior midfielder Hector Moya scored in the 14th minute. The Minutemen dominated the first half, controlling the ball and the tempo of the game with deep passes into the backfield.

Clayton Valley came close to tieing the game when junior forward Jerry Cruz attempted a shot on goal, but the shot was promptly stopped by senior sweeper Faris Rivas.

The Eagles managed to regain control of the offense in the second half.

"We started to connect a lot of passes and stuff and keep things going one or two touches," said Rory Gentry, Clayton Valley's coach. "And you can see the change, we were definitely much more on the attack."

A foul in the box against Concord defender Adam Siddiqi while trying to steal the ball from junior Kevin Sanchez set up a penalty kick for senior forward Adolfo Martinez in the 70th minute.

After the game, goalkeeper and co-captain Emmanuel Jimenez said the foul could have gone either way. "For the PK I was trying to read his mind, but he hit it right down the middle and I dove to the right. Things happen."

Jimenez established his leadership with vocal directions of his defenders and daring diving saves all night.

"He has become the heart of the team. I think this year he's finally come out and decided he wanted to be a leader on the team," said Alfonso Munoz, Concord's coach. "People respect him, the players respect him and his play has been incredible."

The rivalry between the teams was visible with the aggressive style of play of both teams. While four yellow cards were handed out, both teams felt the referees were too lenient with the whistle.

"I thought he (referee) needed to get a lot more control early on because of the rivalry," said Coach Gentry. "I felt that they should've been pulling some cards early on to slow down some of the things that were happening."

On Thursday, Concord (8-0-4) will play Berean Christian at home while Clayton Valley (10-3-3) will play at Ygnacio Valley.
